INLAND KNIGHTS

Midlands duo Laurence Ritchie and Andy Riley make up deep house outfit Inland Knights, and are set to release their ep "Hot Soup". on So Sound. Inland Knights have released tunes on other labels in the UK and abroad, including 2020, Siesta and Panhandle. So why release stuff on other labels when you run your own? “It’s good exposure for us and we really like the labels. It’s good to spread the music and not to be too selfish! And it’s great to work with like-minded individuals.” The pair first came to force with the Smokescreen collective, putting on free parties with increasingly booming sound systems – a system which was eventually seized by police in 1999. “Smokescreen was a really good collective of people who mixed very well and there were no arguments,” explains Laurence, “but people move on. It’s pretty thin on the ground now to what it was before. It will always keep going but in this political climate there's not much scope… it tends to be an older audience who go for the deeper house sound. I’d like to get more of a response from younger people. Like in South Africa, where the house scene is massive in and they're all clued up on it.”
